I'm So Mad

Activity: Decrease Angry Feelings

All of us get angry. It is part of being human. Sometimes it passes quickly. But sometimes, people hold onto their anger for a long time—even a lifetime. And that usually isn’t healthy.

Controlling your anger is challenging, but two key things can help:

- Time

- Distraction

Instead of lashing out in anger, letting a few moments pass gives you time to come up with a better way to handle the situation.

It also helps to sidetrack yourself with something interesting. This keeps your mind from dwelling on what made you so mad.

In Stanza 3 of this poem, there are five suggestions for dealing with anger. Can you find all five ways to delay or distract yourself?

What You’ll Need

• Paper

• Pencil or Pen

STEP 1

Read Stanza 3 of the poem again.

STEP 2

Write down the five suggestions for controlling your anger

STEP 3

Add other things that work for you when you are mad. You might like to throw a ball against a brick wall or listen to a favorite song.

STEP 4

Memorize your list.

The next time you get so angry that you want to hit something, repeat your list to yourself. If that delay and distraction isn’t enough to curb your rage, you can always try one of the suggestions on your list.
